Facebook Connectivity

Bringing more people online to a faster internet.

Background

I designed for the Facebook Connectivity team; our mission is to bring fast, reliable internet to those without it.

During the summer of 2020, I spent 12 weeks designing for a product called Actionable Insights. It is a platform with a suite of business tools that provide intelligence to support telecom companies gain valuable insights and help them prioritize network or product improvement. The main users are people with roles such as Network Analyst, Executive Reporters and Business intelligence just to name a few.

My role

As a product design intern, I led one project from research to development handoff and was in charge of designing 2 smaller projects within the platform.

I also participated in the internal summer Hackathon with 2 other designers, 1 engineer, 1 content strategist and 1 user researcher. Our project was awarded the judge’s choice award for the racial injustice product category and had the opportunity to present our project to the Instagram leadership team!

Key learnings

frequent and early communication with XFN is key

I got to collaborate with 2 engineers, 1 content strategist, 1 PM, 1 UX researcher throughout the term. I learned that early and frequent communication (sometimes even over communication) enabled me to gather product context, properly understand the scope which ultimately helped me navigate through the project and design with more intentionality.

be clear with end goal to prioritize

Design isn’t always going to be positive progression, it’s easy to feel lost and discouraged. Keep your eyes on the end goal to help prioritize ideas.

turn feedback into actions

I shared my designs frequently in very large design crits and feedback can often get lost. It’s important to follow up and get clarification on those feedback so I can move forward with actionable items.

Gratitude

To wrap things up, I really enjoyed my experience at Facebook! I will shamelessly say that I’ve made mistakes but have learned a lot from my design team and XFN peers along the way.

I want to thank the FBC Design team, engineering team, CAS and PM I’ve worked with throughout the summer.

Special thanks to my manager Mac, content strategist Eliza, my buddy Supriya and my recruiter Jessica for all the support, help and guidance you’ve provided me throughout this internship :)

Also just wanted to give a shoutout to all the new friends I made this summer along with my mini intern support group (Celine, Duaa and Zain), you all made working from home more tolerable and truly made this internship memorable.
